Hot Spicy Cheese Bread

Last weekend was the first weekend since 1993 that I (Sara) did not head to Madison Wisconsin for the annual Great Taste of the Midwest Beer Festival. There were many, many traditions created over the 27 consecutive years, but the one Stephen and I missed most was the Saturday morning stroll (or often a brisk mall walk if timing was tight) around the State Capitol building for the farmers’ market. What I really was missing was the hot spicy cheese bread from Stella’s Bakery–a rich soft brioche loaf with hot melty cheese baked inside and enough red pepper flakes to excite the palate and keep you coming back for more. Tearing into a loaf and eating the whole thing with just your hands and a few friends (VERY FEW). I had to look up a recipe to try to recreate it.

I found several websites with the same recipe, which I’m just going to link here rather than recreate it, since I didn’t follow it precisely anyway because I can’t follow a recipe to save my life. But we did get some good photos, for a change, so feast your eyes on this! Oh, and here’s the recipe on Splendid Table:
