Farmer Bob Lober is attempting a new grafting technique with his heirloom tomato plants this year. A common practice with fruit trees, root grafting imbues the scion plant with added attributes such as disease resistance and drought tolerance. Bob is using roots from a wild tomato variety that have a larger, sturdier structure than those of typical cultivars. Ideally this will allow the plant to absorb more nutrients from the soil and make for a healthier, more productive plant. Look to get his delicious tomatoes in your shares beginning in July.
