Summertime Blues

Summer is wrapping up, and we're both happy and sad about it. Although it may seem to be taking it's sweet time regarding cooling down, we are seeing a shift in produce. Nolte took the week off from harvesting, and John Kopmann doesn't have corn this week. Tomatoes and green beans are still producing, and peppers are coming on strong. Eggplant, and summer squash are slowing way down, but okra is picking up and winter squash and potatoes are ready. Peaches are gone, but apples are here in full force. We're seeing the first of the fall broccoli and bok choy, which means more of the cruciferous vegetables are on the way...and paw paws are ready!

We're ready for the produce to slow down, but that never really seems to happen until mid-to-late November. Some produce we're sad to see end, but the trick to seasonal eating is to enjoy everything to it's fullest while it's available. Eat it in every way possible, preserve it if you can, get a little sick of it, and bid it a fond farewell until next season.

Soon we'll be saying "Ciao, cherry tomatoes. Au revoir, eggplant!"  And "Bienvenido, broccoli and Brussels sprouts."

We are very happy to have our products included in shares through Fair Shares.  The folks at Fair Shares have set-up a great distribution schedule that works with smaller scale local farmers taking into account weekly and seasonal limitations in harvesting. The staff at Fair Shares are easy to work with, being both friendly and professional.  They have been very straightforward about their needs and those that the share members represent. We look forward to growing with Fair Shares!
