Homemade Healthy Dog Food
Yep! You heard that right. We feed ourselves wholesome food so why not give the best member of the family the same using Fair Shares ingredients. It’s easy, delicious, and so much cheaper than store-bought. This recipe makes 12 servings (6 days of food for 1 medium-sized dog or 8 days for a small dog)
INGREDIENTS
Fair Shares
2 lbs ground grassfed beef
1 cup brown rice
2-3 shredded carrots
1-2 apples, diced
Other Ingredients
1 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tbsp ground flaxseed
1 tsp brewers yeast
3 antacid tablets with calcium
2 tbsp oat or rice flour (optional but it helps thicken)
METHOD
I made it in the Instant Pot by browning the beef and then adding everything else except the carrot and apple. Add enough water to cover ingredients. Cook on manual setting for 20 minutes and then stirred in the apples and carrots while still hot.
If you don’t have an instant pot you can brown the ground beef in a large skillet. Add all other ingredients besides the carrot and apple. Add enough water to cover ingredients. Bring to a boil and turn to a simmer. Cover and continue to simmer for 35 minutes. While it’s still hot, stir in apples and carrots. Let cool and freeze in 2/3 cup pattys on parchment paper. Thaw in fridge or microwave for 45sec to 1 minute to thaw.
Serving size for a 30lb dog is 2/3 cup twice a day. If your dog is overweight, use less rice. You can sub the carrots and apples for cabbage, potatoes (regular and sweet) winter squash, peas, or lentils.
Note: onion and garlic are poisonous to dogs so don’t use in this.
My dog DEVOURED it!
