Welcome to Fair Shares Season 14 Wk43

Half-Share Members: it's an ODD-week pickup--check your subscriptions in your Farmigo account if you are unsure whether you are an ODD- or EVEN-week half share. Please note that you will receive this newsletter weekly (you may request access to order through the store on your off weeks).

WHAT'S NEW IN 2022

2022 is going to be a year of big changes for us. For those of you who haven't yet read the news, please take a moment to read about (and help us with) our upcoming transition. Many thanks to those who have emailed some great suggestions and given kind comments. We are compiling all your ideas.

This year, I (Sara) will be moving—in June to New England and in the fall to live on a sailing catamaran with my husband and four cats. I will work from afar until my positions and tasks are filled, and things are going smoothly. We are looking at selling all or part of the business and are seeking the perfect buyer who will help carry on our vision. Jamie and Lindy, along with our other employees, Arianna, Joe, Tina and Cole, will continue on to keep things "normal" but we do expect some changes--hopefully for the better, which will incorporate member ideas and suggestions.

We'd love your help in growing Fair Shares. This CCSA is profitable only when we have enough members. We found that in 2020 when covid doubled our membership, we were able to hire employees, pay our farmers on delivery, update and upgrade equipment, pay ourselves and our small staff, and even offer an extra thank you for our amazing volunteers. Since 2021, our numbers have been dwindling, but we think St. Louis is big enough to keep our membership at a profitable level, and grow more.

How can we attract more members and retain them? What are the reasons potential members don't take the plunge and join? What is not working for members that makes them leave? How do we expand our visibility? How do we encourage people to support us and our farmers all year long? What would help you make Fair Shares--and eating locally and seasonally--more of a commitment in your life? What could we do differently to make it more appealing or more convenient?

Here are some thoughts on actions/ideas that we think might help:
1. Find a designated PR & marketing person
2. Offer prepared (ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook) meals
3. Offer full, half or mini BYO (Build Your Own) shares, with some kind of commitment that people will shop, and we need to keep a minimum number of people with standard shares so we can support the produce farmers
4. Establish one or two additional pickup locations in well-positioned areas
5. Educate people on the benefits of eating locally and seasonally

Do you have any ideas or suggestions that might help? Email us -- we value your input!

Winter Shares Blues
This time of the year can be a challenge. Produce availability is at a minimum, so we encourage members to use this opportunity to use up the goods you put up or accumulated from the past year and use your share value to restock the larder. We are hoping to keep our costs down and our vast inventory rotated. Because we have a lot of variety on hand, but often not enough of any particular item, you will find more "Wildcards" on your lists. When these items are tradable, we encourage you to delete the wildcard from your cart and shop for what you want. Otherwise, we will select items we have on hand that match the price.

A Message to our new Trial Share Members
Welcome to our community! Please note that this is NOT AT ALL what the shares look like in the spring, summer and fall, because very little produce is available. All the greens have gone into the store for trades and purchase. This is an opportunity to explore the vast inventory of local goodies that Fair Shares has to offer, and to help support us and our local farmers and vendors all year long. We'd love to answer all your questions and invite you to join our Facebook group where many members share recipes, ask and answer questions, and are available to help you get the most out of the food in your shares. We even have long-time members willing to "mentor" newbies on how to make it work.

Beet Soup in Roasted Acorn Squash
A great winter warmer. It was way too stunning a presentation for a weeknight, but we're worth it. The secret to the stunning presentation is in the toppings.
