Welcome to Fair Shares Season 14 Wk44

Half-Share Members: it's an EVEN-week pickup--check your subscriptions in your Farmigo account if you are unsure whether you are an ODD- or EVEN-week half share. Please note that you will receive this newsletter weekly (you may request access to order through the store on your off weeks).

Mark Your calendars--our final week of Season 14 is February 23 & 24, Week 49.

We'll take the first three weeks of March off and resume with Season 15 Week 1 on March 23 & 24.

We'll plan a shopping day on the second week so people can come for staples, and milk if you want to order it for that week.

2022 is going to be a year of big changes for us. For those of you who haven't yet read the news, please take a moment to read about (and help us with) our upcoming transition. We've gotten some great suggestions and feedback from members, and we thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts. We'll be putting together surveys for members to tell us about the produce they received and other questions that will help steer the future of FS.

This year, I (Sara) will be moving—in June to New England and in the fall to live on a sailing catamaran with my husband and our four cats. I will work from afar until my positions and tasks are filled, and things are going smoothly. We are looking at selling all or part of the business and are seeking the perfect buyer who will help carry on our vision. Jamie and Lindy, along with our other employees, Arianna, Joe, Tina and Cole, will continue on to keep things "normal" but we do expect some changes--hopefully for the better, which will incorporate member ideas and suggestions.

How can we attract more members and retain them? What are the reasons potential members don't take the plunge and join? What is not working for members that makes them leave? How do we expand our visibility? How do we encourage people to support us and our farmers all year long? What would help you make Fair Shares--and eating locally and seasonally--more of a commitment in your life? What could we do differently to make it more appealing or more convenient?

Here are some thoughts on actions/ideas that we think might help:
1. Find a designated PR & marketing person
2. Offer prepared (ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook) meals
3. Offer full, half or mini BYO (Build Your Own) shares, with some kind of commitment that people will shop, and we need to keep a minimum number of people with standard shares so we can support the produce farmers
4. Establish one or two additional pickup locations in well-positioned areas
5. Educate people on the benefits of eating locally and seasonally

Do you have any ideas or suggestions that might help? Email us -- we value your input!

No Greens This Week
Our one reliable greens producer in the winter is Good Life Growing, because they grow hydroponically and don't have some of the issue of planting in hard ground like the dirt farmers. But they are as susceptible to winter storms damaging their hoop houses, which is what happened over the weekend. Sadly, their salad greens got too cold and they didn't make it, which means it will be a few weeks before the next crop is ready. This is really when we get the winter time blues. We appreciate those of you willing to stick it out in the winter and support our farmers by enjoying the jarred goods and other items.

A Message to our new Trial Share Members
Welcome to our community! Please note that this is NOT AT ALL what the shares look like in the spring, summer and fall, because very little produce is available. All the greens have gone into the store for trades and purchase. This is an opportunity to explore the vast inventory of local goodies that Fair Shares has to offer, and to help support us and our local farmers and vendors all year long. We'd love to answer all your questions and invite you to join our Facebook group where many members share recipes, ask and answer questions, and are available to help you get the most out of the food in your shares. We even have long-time members willing to "mentor" newbies on how to make it work.

This is a recycled recipe that can be substituted with any winter squash variety and grain or legume... Desperate times call for desperate measures, and my refrigerator has never felt so lonely and abandoned as it does now. Rather than despair, I pretended it was creativity rather than lack of supplies that led to this …

Beet Soup in Roasted Acorn Squash
A great winter warmer. It was way too stunning a presentation for a weeknight, but we're worth it. The secret to the stunning presentation is in the toppings.
