Welcome to Week 8!

We'll see all Full Shares, EVEN-week Half Shares, Mini Shares and Delivered Shares this week

Did everyone enjoy their spring or did you blink and miss it? The farmers all have lettuce now, so we're going to overload you while we can, because heat makes lettuce bolt and we won't see much, if any, in the summer. Consider the salad dressing suggestion below, along with our other blogs about how to utilize more of your lettuce, as our apology for the glut. Don't blink, it'll be gone before you know it.

Help! Volunteers Needed
One of our amazing member volunteers, Cabrini King, is moving and will no longer be available on Wednesdays to help with weighing, sorting packing and setup for a few hours before pickups, and we'll need to find a replacement. Also...

Thursday May 31st, Lindy wil be on vacation so we are going to be scrambling and looking for some extra help since we will have to do her Kirkwood run, meaning we will have only one person plus a part-time volunteer for the pickups. Those of you who come in on Thursdays and see how busy we are when we aren't short-handed can imagine. If any Thursday members at the Mothership can come get your share on Wednesday, please feel free. If you're able to help us out with distribution, we would certainly appreciate any time you can spare, so please let us know when you're available.

Official Notice #1: Fair Shares will not have pickups/delivery the week of July 4th!

A Note About Ordering Online
Our system is less than perfect (stunning, we know). Because of the nature of our trading system at pickups, along with our lack of time available for updating the nearly 800-item store for before both Wednesday and Thursday pickups, the inventory is often inaccurate. If we are out of something you request, we may contact you if time allows, or send an alternative option. You can always trade it and select something different from the swap items available at your pickup site*. If you don't see something you're looking for, just ask because we might have it even if it isn't in the store.
*Note this option is not available to Delivery to Groups members.

Pickup members must order by noon on your pickup day.
Delivered share members must order by 9:30 on your delivery day.

Login to your Farmigo account to swap out the tradable items in your cart.

Whenever there is bibb or butterhead lettuce available, I fantasize about lettuce wraps. You can wrap anything in a lettuce leaf, really, just make sure to make it a fun, communal meal in which everyone gets to participate in the assembly of their own wraps.Read more
It's lettuce season. This is the time of the year when organizing a combined CSA gets difficult. When everyone who grows lettuce for us has lettuce ready, and we have committed to buying their lettuce, we all get a little tired of salads. Now you may wonder why we would commit to purchasing lettuce from so many farmers, and that's a good question, with a reasonable answer: the weather makes us do it.Read more

Bamboo Shoots

Don't Be Bamboozled! Bamboo shoots are a fun fresh spring vegetable with a very short season, so don't miss the chance add a new and exciting ingredient to your culinary repertoire! Ozark Forest Bamboo Shoots: Peel the outer layers off to reveal the pretty green shoots. Slice into rings and bring to a boil in water with sea salt. Boil about 5 minutes, or until tender. Drain, eat some, store the rest in the fridge to add to salads or in stir fries or pasta. The taste is similar to artichoke hearts, and is far superior to the canned variety. Fun! Read more
T’is the season to be grillin’, fa la la la la, la la la la (go ahead, count ‘em, they’re all there). Get the heat out of the kitchen and do all the cooking on the grill. Check out this cool marinade for flank or skirt steaks.Read more
Read about Companion Bread's Local Grains Project, which we at Fair Shares are excited to be a part of: AS PART OF OUR CONTINUED COMMITMENT to supporting and enriching our community, we’re thrilled to introduce our Local Grains Project – a selection of breads made almost exclusively with locally grown and milled grains along with locally produced foodstuffs (think honey, sorghum, nuts and seeds). This project gives us the opportunity to give a voice to the Missouri/Southern Illinois regional food production ecosystem by delivering thoughtful small batch breads to our local consumer. This ...Read more
It's officially salad season. That means it's time to start using a bed of lettuce as the base for every meal. Whether you're cooking burgers, making pasta, mixing up a smoked salmon salad, or whipping up a stir-fry, be sure to serve it on salad. Some people say they have trouble getting through so much lettuce every week, but if there is one thing we should all be eating with abandon, it's salad. I know, I know, sometimes just the thought of making a salad is too much work, but there are a number of things you can do to prepare in advance and make salads a simple joy rather than a thankless chore.Read more
This recipe was made up after the fact, based on very fuzzy recollections from a tropical vacation on a boat several years ago, along with another recipe for Mushroom-Polenta Collard Rolls I found online. I adjusted the recipe based on what we did, as well as can be remembered. What I do remember was that this was delicious. Since we have a variety of greens in the shares, I would say that Swiss chard would make a great substitute.Read more
