Reminder for the End-of-September Sanity Break

Notice Number 3. Mark Your Calendars: There will be NO PICKUPS on Week 26, September 26 and 27th! How will you remember? No pickups Wk 26 on the 26th.
Although our farmers would love it if we were here to sell their food that week, we really gotta get the heck outta dodge. Really, we'll be much nicer when we come back. We need this break to recharge and save our sanity, though we fear it may be too late. Odd-week half shares picking up this week, you will not be affected, so you can disregard this notice unless you like to come in on your off week.

This Wednesday, September 5th.
Involunteer Extraordinaire Stephen, who drives the shares from the Mothership to UCity each Wednesday, will be flying back in town on Wednesday afternoon, and if there are any delays, he may be late to do the delivery. Our backup delivery people are unavailable, so in a worst case scenario, we'll lose one of the three of us at Fair Shares while we get the food to UCity. This is all to say, expect delays, feel free to help, and please be patient. Thanks! Also, we're seeking volunteers on Wednesdays... 

BYOB = Bring Your Own Bags. Please put your reusable bags in the trunk of your car so you are prepared should you have to do the pickup unexpectedly (or even expectedly, like you do each or every other week). Although we are thankful to Josh Allen at Companion Baking for supplying an ongoing backup of paper bags for everyone, we think you should all do the right thing and advertise for Fair Shares with the reusable bags we gave you! Josh is the only member exempt from this request. Also, if you borrowed a cloth "guilt bag" at pickup, consider this your guilt trip and bring it back in for the next poor soul who forgot their bags. Thanks!

Todd Geisert Farms / Farm To You Market Closed
We got news quite suddenly last week that Todd Geisert's Farm To You Market was closing. Since we didn't get any advanced notice, we don't know what this might mean for the future, but will keep you apprised as we learn more. We did hear from Todd's processor, who said he'll be able to make the sausage recipes in the future, but we'll have to figure out where the pork is coming from. Todd indicated that he still has pigs, so we hope to be able to continue offering you the same product, but we don't know how pricing or anything else will be affected yet. Sadface.

We have moved the Wednesday members' ordering deadline up an hour to 11:00a.m. because noon isn't giving us enough time to pull the reports, gather and pack all the food and set up for the pickups. Please wait until your weekly share items have been added to your cart before selecting any items from the store. You don't have to wait until the newsletter is sent, but keep in mind that the store updating will not have been completed yet. If the store is closed by the time you check, you may logout to browse the store and send us an email, but we may not see it before you pick up because we often aren't at our computers all afternoon.

If you arrive early and we're scrambling to finish setting up, feel free to jump in--we're happy to have our community participate in on our Community Supported Agriculture!

Monster Melons aka Kiwano - African Horned Cucumber aka Jelly Melon

Bob Lober of St. Isidore Farm tried a crazy new crop this year: the Jelly Melon. He said it grew enormous and out of control, and he had no idea when to harvest it. According to Wikipedia the fruit is supposed to be bright yellow or orange when ripe, but can be eaten when more green like the majority of what we have here. They will ripen like bananas once picked. Reviews on the jelly melon (as we're calling them) on the Rare Seeds website was pretty entertaining. Have a look see here.

We got a dozen of these scary little creatures in for those of you who would like to broaden your culinary horizons. $1.50 each in the store.

Meat Orders from the Store

We request that you order the number of packages you would like. We will make the price in the store a typical package price and will update with the actual price. You are welcome to email us with details on whether you are seeking a specific weight or number of pieces.

For example, boneless chicken breasts are usually two to a package and average one pound. If you want two packages (four breasts), you will order two packages. If you are looking for a minimum of three pounds and you don't care how many breasts or packages it takes, you can enter "1" and email us with any instructions. We will do our best to get the store updated with accurate info, but keep in mind that some items vary wildly in size and weight each time they come in (like chicken breasts and thighs). When we get different sizes week to week, and when deliveries don't come in until Wednesday, it makes keeping this info updated in the store impossible, so just email us to tell us what you want.

Keeping the inventory in the store accurate is extra difficult with our system and schedule, so if we are out of something you request, we may contact you if time allows, or send an alternative option. You can always trade it and select something different from the swap items available at your pickup site (sorry, this option is not available to Delivery to Groups members). If you're looking for something you don't see, just email/ask because we might have it even if it isn't in the store.

Delivered share members must order by 9:00am on your delivery day.
Wednesday pickup members must order by 11 on Wednesday and Thursday
pickup members must order by noon on Thursday.

I can’t find it in any of my favorite cookbooks to give credit, so I'll just tell you how to do it, and suggest these variations I would do now in order to make it more local.
