Welcome to Week 6!

We look forward to seeing all full-share, mini-share, EVEN-week half-share and Delivered share members tomorrow and Thursday.

Please Be One of Those Annoying People Who Share Too Many Boring Food Photos All Over Social Media!

We could really benefit from a little member love: please "check in" when you come pick up your share; one-up your friends with posts of even prettier produce; brag about how spoiled you are that your personal shoppers at Fair Shares source happy, healthy, local food that makes your weekly shopping as fun as trick-or-treating! Can you help us by posting photos of your Fair Shares meals and talking about us on your social media pages? We have both a FaceBook page (@FairSharesSTL) and Twitter account (@fairsharesccsa).

Thank you to those of you who have told your friends and family about Fair Shares! We've had a wonderful show of interest in trial shares because of you all, and history has shown there is no better advertising than word of mouth from our members.

Trades and Additional Purchases

Please read the rules of trading and how we like to receive your trades and orders on the Trades and Orders page of our website (note you must be logged in to access this page).

Place orders by noon* to orders@fairshares.org -- you can just reply to this email.
*Delivered-share members: please email by noon Wednesday OR wait until after you've received the Wednesday evening newsletter and order by 9:30a.m. Thursday. (Because we may no longer have certain items available, please check the Wednesday evening newsletter for the updated produce list).

Be sure to include your account name--which is your last name and pickup group, so we know where to send the food.

Better Butter

Butter is good. Everyone knows that. But locally-made, sweet, creamy, luscious, delectable, buttery butter...well now, that's something entirely different--but you'll have to taste it for yourself. Larder & Cupboard Butter: $6.75/.5lb.

Baetje Cheese Tasting Postponed

We're moving the cheese tasting to Tuesday, June 6th at 6p.m. Please mark your calendar and gather the troops. It's a party situation.

New! Ludwig Farms Cheeses
Kickapoo: $6.25. Kickapoo is a semi-hard, raw milk cheese reminiscent of an aged Parmesan, with fresh, buttery flavors and a sharp finish.  It has a distinctive green rind and we think it’s just fun to say the name.  Kickapoo pairs well with fruit, nuts, and wine.

Prairies Fruits Cheeses
Black Goat: $6.50. A bloomy-rind goat round dusted in vegetable ash to neutralize the acidity and give a mellow and buttery finish.
Little Bloom: $9.50. Bloomy-rind camembert style with a mushroomy rind and slightly tangy yet creamy interior.
Angel Food: $5. Bloomy-rind brie-type with a thin rind and creamy paste. All these cheeses are worth letting them come to room temp for the full-flavor experience.

Mother's Day Hams
She really wants chocolate, but go ahead and bake her a ham. Limited availability. Order ahead.
Bone-in hams are $6.25/lb. (~18-20 lb.)
Boneless Hams are $8/lb. (~7lb.)

Bittersweet Artisan Chocolate Treats
??Lava Cakes??: $8/2-pk. We sold out already but have ordered more. We don't yet know whether we will get any for Thursday. Sorry to tease you. We have lots of the chocolate sauce (below), though. Oh my goodness, these delectable, sophisticated, rich and luscious cupcakes are to die for. Serving suggestion: Get a package for mom, and order your own so she doesn't have to share with you or the kids. Microwave for 20-30 seconds before serving.
Salted Caramel Chocolate Sauce: $10.75. Just heat and add a spoon. Or dip in fresh strawberries, or spoon over ice cream, vanilla yogurt or even pancakes. See additional serving suggestions above.

Kitchen Kulture
Apple Cider and Tarragon Dressing: $7.50/pt. This is rich and creamy, but dairy free. Delish as a dip or on your salad.
Strawberry Tamarind Dressing: $5.50/8oz. We thought having a lovely salad dressing in the shares during lettuce season would be appreciated. This sweet and tangy dressing also works well as a sauce for vegetables (like asparagus!) and roasted meats.

Wild Green Garlic and Almond Pesto: $7.50/8oz. Word's out that this is some good stuff.
Saag Paneer: $11. With Mofu Tofu and local greens--just add rice, and maybe some sauteed chicken for a quick and tasty meal.

Coconut Grits: $10. Creamy coconut milk and grits? Okay!
Cheddar Grits: $11. They're cheesy delish and the perfect base for a little grilled meat or fish. Greens on the side, please.

Moroccan Letil Stew: $11. As seen in the shares! Heady Moroccan spices bring ana exotic savory spice to the dinner table.
Pumpkin Risotto: $11. A hearty side dish with a little sweetness from the winter squash and dried fruit.

Date Lady
All items are $7: Organic Dates, Date Syrup, Date Balsamic Vinegar (YUM! This is my go-to salad dressing right now)

All the produce is very limited, so please leave a second choice when you order, or don't plan to make even trades.

Thies (?) Farms Strawberries: $6.75/qt. Every salad, every yogurt, every peanut butter sandwich...strawberries included. We didn't get lots of extras since everyone has them in their share.

Organic Head Lettuce: $4/share. We aren't sure if we'll have any available, but if you want some, ask, and we'll send it if we have it.

Biver Farms Kale: $4.00/13oz.
Biver Chinese Cabbage: $3.50/hd.

Yellow Dog Asparagus: $3.25/bu. We're sad to report that next week is likely to be the end of Carl Saunders's aspragus. We can get more from others, but at a higher price.
Thies or Scharf (?) Asparagus: $4/bu.

Biver or Double Star Radishes: $2.75/bu.

Double Star Green Onions: $2.75/bu. Very limited.
St. Isidore Green Garlic: $2.25/bu. Also very limited.

Bee Simple Shoots: $4. Not sure what we'll be getting tomorrow - pea, sunflower, maybe a super mix.
Ozark Forest Mushrooms: $7.00. A mix of Shiitakes and Oysters.

Happy Milk from Ozark Mountain Creamery
Order by Sunday for pickup with your share.

This is a quick and easy sauce that you can prepare on a weeknight, but it's good enough for a Sunday night dinner. It's adapted from Ina Garten's Weeknight Bolognese, substituting in all the wonderful Fair Shares goodies we could find.Read more
Sometimes when we hear "wilted lettuce", we feel a little sad, knowing that the poor lettuce is thirsty and has been out in the heat too long. But this wilted lettuce recipe is a cause for celebration, and we'll celebrate by eating it!Read more

Here's a quick rundown of how to use some of the items we give in the shares. If any items in your share that aren't listed here have you baffled, just ask! We've gotten some farm photos and stories to share this week. Floods 2017 Here in the city, we are always aware of the floods in our region, if nothing else but because of the media coverage. But our farmers are accutely aware and very often severely affected by the spring rains that often devastate their crops, animals and homes. Every year, we fear for the livlihood of our dear, hardworking farmers when Mother Nature rolls the dice to decide on draught or deluge--or in some cases, both in the same season. This week, Nicola MacPherson of Ozark Forest Mushrooms included the photo and caption ...Read more

Whenever there is bibb or butterhead lettuce available, I fantasize about lettuce wraps. You can wrap anything in a lettuce leaf, really, just make sure to make it a fun, communal meal in which everyone gets to participate in the assembly of their own wraps.Read more
