Member Testimonials: Why Join Fair Shares CCSA?

Fair Shares has created a community of happy eaters who care about and appreciate their food--how it tastes, who grows it, and who aggregates it. We have a Facebook group in which our members share ideas and recipes on how to use the food in the shares. We include recipes and tips in each weekly newsletter, and love chatting with members during pickups to help them feel confident when trying new foods. Our members are amazing, smart, professional, creative, witty and wise people who we are honored to call friends and acquaintances--we even host happy hours so we get to visit and say thanks for being part of our community.

The reasons our members join are as diverse as the population who comprises our community. We've organized them into five basic topics and asked our members to talk a bit on which topics appeal to them most about belonging to Fair Shares:

1. Health

Fair Shares members Matt Sorrell, Amy Knoblock-Hahn, Justin and Colette Owens, Magdalena Alvarado, and Emily Vasbinder explain how Fair Shares has helped make it easy for them to feed their families safer, healthier, more nutritious food.

2. Economy

Fair Shares members Emily Korsch, Kyle Crawford, Scott Pohlmann, and Billy & Kathy Foster address the importance of supporting the local economy and local farmers, and how Fair Shares helps them keep their money in the local community while reaping the benefits of better-tasting food.

3. Environment

Fair Shares members Barb Smith, Angie Meara, and Emily Korsch talk about how Fair Shares helps them reduce their food miles and carbon footprints by supporting local farms and making more responsible choices by eating foods that are grown close to our community rather than being shipped half way around the world.

4. Convenience

Fair Shares members Sharon Spurlock, Matt Sorrell, Rebecca and Jordan Lev, and Magdalena Alvarado like how their CSA makes it easy for them to support local farmers, eat delicious, healthy food all year long, and customize their shares to suit their preferences.

5. Fun

Fair Shares members Emily Vasbinder, Jordan and Rebecca Lev, Matt Sorrell, EuNice Loh and Adam Lorenzen express the joys of eating locally and seasonally, and breaking out of creative ruts by broadening their food horizons with the consistent array of fresh and delicious foods offered in their weekly shares.

Tip: How to Prep Asparagus

When you get asparagus in your CSA, it's going to be so much fresher and more tender than the often tough and woody stalks you'll find in the grocery store. The "proper" technique for removing the tough end is to hold the end and the lower part of the stalk and bend until it snaps.Read more

Testimonials

Yellow Dog Farms is a successful small farm in a large part due to Sara and Jamie at Fair Shares CCSA. They were willing to take a chance on a budding (pun intended) first generation Farmer. We were not a supplier to Fair Shares the very first year, but have been ever since and hopefully far into our shared futures.

I am proud to be a supplier and you should be proud to be a member of Fair Shares CCSA where we are all involved in growing and eating better quality, healthy food and supporting small, local businesses and small scale agriculture in Missouri and Illinois.
