Senate Bill 1279, introduced by Senator Dan Clemens, would ban any type of labeling that enables consumers to know if their dairy products contain rBGH, a genetically engineered hormone that induces cows to produce more milk.
This bill is being pushed by Monsanto (the producer of rBGH) in many states, and Missouri is the next target.
This Bill is Anti-Farmer, Anti-Consumer and Anti-Business!
Farmers & dairy processors have the right to truthfully tell consumers what is in their food and how it is produced.
This is not only an issue of free speech for farmers, but also a corporate and government intrusion into the business relationship between farmer and consumer.
Facts About rBGH Labeling:
88% of consumers surveyed think labeling of milk produced without growth hormones should be allowed as such.
In response to consumer demand, the use of rBGH has drastically declined from 22.3% of dairy cows in 2002 to 17.2% last year.
Only 6.2% of cows in herds of less than 100 head are treated with rBGH. In Missouri, 84% of dairy operations have herds with less than 100 head.
The FDA has said that the following label statement is acceptable: "from cows not treated with rBST". In 2007, Monsanto asked the FDA and the Federal Trade Commission to declare these labels to be misleading. The request was denied.
Who opposes banning rBGH labeling?...family dairy farmers, the vast majority of consumers, grocers and retailers, dairy supply companies, and even the International Dairy Foods Association.
