Welcome to Week 7

Bring Your Bags! We went through all our paper bags and guilt bags today, and you will be carrying your food to your car in several trips if you don't come prepared! Apparently tornado weather makes people forgetful, so please put your bags by the front door now, and send them with your partner as well, in case he or she ends up doing the pickup.

This is the final week in the first cycle. This doesn't mean a whole lot for members, but we will switch out some of the meats, pastas and non-produce items in each of the seven food lists and start a new rotation of the pickup groups through the lists.

Vacations and Week Swapping

Members: Please note that we are not able to coordinate everyone's vacations to find someone who can switch pickup weeks with you. We suggest you post a message to the Fair Shares Coordination Forum with plenty of advanced notice to try to get another member to switch weeks with you. You'll need to let them know your pickup group, what day you pickup, what weeks you'll want to switch, and make sure to find someone who picks up at your pickup site. If you are a half share member, please check the forum and help out your fellow members--you'll be posting your own request there soon enough!
You can also offer to sell someone your food for the week(s) you'll be away, or you can have a friend or family member get the food, or you can donate it.

Member in Need

Fair Shares member Claire Martin in FSD had her house burn down last week. We asked her if she needed some help, thinking our membership might be a good resource. Here's Claire's response:

"Thanks so much for all your support. I've never tasted food so good as last week's strawberries and kale and lettuce and bamboo......coming to Fair Shares was all I could think of last Thursday with a smoke filled nose.

You can watch the progress here: www.thehousethatclairebuilt.blogspot.com....

Right now I'm looking for things non food related like;
-structural engineers
-fire restoration specialists
-living arrangements somewhere close to midtown... rental property with fenced yard for the dog (insurance is trying to arrange it but they are doing a terrible job)"

If you can help or know anyone who can, let us know and we'll put you in touch with Claire. Thanks!

The Newlywed Game

Wedded Bliss. I don't know about the bride and groom, but I had a marvelous time at all the weekend's festivities at Overlook Farm in Clarksville, Missouri. This absolutely beautiful locale has opulent accommodations, and Chef Tim Grandinetti cooks up some fantastic food in the Overlook Station restaurant. I hate to sound like an advertisement, but we all highly recommend this place for a romantic weekend away or a wedding or a family outing.

Arianna and Kevin set their guests up in style with local goodie bags, and planned some wonderful meals with food from our Fair Shares producers. The spectacular array of local foods consumed over the weekend included: Black Bear bagels, Companion Croissants, Marcoot cheese, Our Garden butter, Berger Bluff lettuce, Ozark Forest Sorrel, del Carmen black beans, American Grassfed Beef brisket, Hinkebein Hills pork shoulder, Salume Beddu bacon, River Hills Poultry Alliance and Yellow Wood eggs, Missouri Grain Project flour, Missouri Northern pecans, Yellow Dog radishes, Nolte cucumbers and tomatoes, Troutdale Farms trout, Greenwood Farms milk, Girod green onions, Sunshine Farm Strawberries, Blue Heron fire roasted jalapeños, St. Isidore mint, Kakao chocolates, Fitz's root beer, Schlafly Beer, Lewis Osterweis Ginger Beer, and I'm sure there are a number of other items I'm not thinking of now, but that's a pretty impressive list, I think!

Payments Due

If you are a half share member on the six payment plan, your second payment was due by May 7th. Your third payment will be due by July 7th. If you have not made two payments, please bring your checkbook with you this week! If you have not set up automated payments please see the Membership Page for instructions and get this taken care of NOW so that we don't have to do this every month! Thanks.
collards
Chippy Dippy
I looked up a collard chips recipe, and was not particularly surprised to see an abundance of ideas, from oven baked to dehydrated recipes. So I suggest doing a search yourself for inspiration on seasonings and techniques, because there are a lot, and everyone will need to find what works for them. The idea is that all your cooking greens--from Swiss chard, to kale, to collards and mustard greens--will make a great, satisfying and healthy chip that you can eat guilt-free. Watch your children eat greens! That's right, your family can get all the health benefits without the mushy, over-cooked alternative (for those of you who aren't into that). Also, Fair Shares member Jennifer McDaniel, who is a dietitian, shared her video on how to make kale chips here. Enjoy!

Tea Time!

In a stroke of genius, none of us took a photo of these sandwiches, but the memory lives on in our minds. Here's a photo I borrowed from http://jaimecooks.wordpress.com

Radish Sandwiches: We made yummy little open-faced radish and truffle butter sandwiches on Irish Soda Bread for the Tea before the wedding. Jamie made the Irish Soda Bread, and we mixed in a little black truffle oil with some Our garden butter. Delish!

Cucumber Sandwiches: Sorry to say we have no cucumbers this week, but we will again in the near future, so tuck this idea into your mental recipe database if you don't still have a cuke in the fridge. Try an open-faced cucumber sandwich on Irish soda bread with a smear of herbed quark cheese and a bit of sorrel leaf. Top with a thin slice of cucumber and serve with tea, dahling.
