Welcome to Week 6!

Just when we thought summer was here to stay...

Thanks to everyone who braved the weather to come to the Fair Shares Potluck Picnic on Sunday. It may have been cold and rainy, but we ate well! Perhaps we should move our picnic to July or August, when the inevitable cold temperatures and rain would be appreciated. Those of you who chickened out missed some amazing food made with lots of Fair Shares ingredients. Anyone who is willing to share recipes, please do so on the forum, especially the contest winners!

And the winners are...

Winners of the people's choice contest from the potluck will receive a $10 credit to spend on Fair Shares goods!
Best Appetizer: Teri Pohlman, Methuselah Crisps
Best Side Dish: Kathy Kuper, 3 Qi Salad
Best Beverage: Stephen Hale, Schlafly Schwarzbier (he is the brewer, it actually was his recipe, so he gets to claim that one!)
Best Dessert (TIE): ??, Pecan Pie (whoever baked that little gem of a pie, email to claim your prize!)
Best Dessert (TIE): Cassandra Van Dunk, Peach Blueberry Cobbler

Congratulations and thanks for feeding us delicious food! Please do share your recipe on the forum.

Extras Available

SORRY, we are still out of San Luis Tortilla products, and Peanut Butter!

Although we were tempted to say NO PRE-ORDER TRADES this week because of Kevin and Arianna's upcoming wedding this weekend (we're a little busy with plans and excitement), we'll accept them. But be nice to us--we're giving Arianna the day off on Thursday, and she does most of the work. Email your requests to orders@fairshares.org by noon on your pickup day. Don't forget to include your pickup site.

- Collards: $2/bag
- Lettuce Mix: $4/.5 lb. bag
- Mint: $1.50/2 oz. bag
- Mizuna: $4/.5 lb. Makes an awesome pesto!
- Asparagus: $3.25/.75 lb. Not sure on the quantities--the weather has wreaked havoc on the asparagus growth! If we end up not getting enough to put in the shares, we should be able to get enough to sell.
- Strawberries: $6.50/qt. Sure you can feed them to the kids, but what about adult cocktails? Don't cut yourself short--you're worth it! Oooh, good idea! Strawberry margarita? Two, please!
- Radishes: $2.50/bu.

Meat Special!
We're offering a special on American Grassfed Beef hamburger patties this week since we defrosted it and have so much left (we had about half the attendees who rsvp'd, and we did all we could to eat everything, but...). We can't break down the 10 pound boxes of beef, which are packaged in 40 bulk patties--but if someone wants to buy the whole 10-pound package, you can divide it amongst your friends and neighbors! We have two boxes available
- 10 lb. Box o' Burgers: $50 (40 patties, 1/4 lb. each, save $1 per pound and they are already formed into patties!)
Note that these are defrosted and need to be cooked by next Sunday. You can also make a nice meatloaf or meatballs to cook and freeze. Oooh, good idea!

Greens and Roots

The majority of the produce in the shares right now is either root veggies or greens, which is an indication that we are still experiencing spring, even though the weather seems unsure of itself.

Greens: Radishes, beets and turnips are the roots we see during the spring and fall seasons, and the greens are as delicious as the roots! Radish and turnip greens tend to be a bit sharper and more intense, so cooking them mellows the flavor. Beet greens are related to Swiss Chard, and can be treated the same way. In fact, all greens can be mixed and matched and cooked together, but note that the more tender greens won't need to cook as long. Greens love vinegar, and can be tossed with your favorite salad dressing and served as a side dish. They also like a bit of cheese, or lemon or just plain butter and salt (okay, who doesn't like butter and salt?). The important thing is to cook them and eat them, because not only are they good for you, but we bought them for you!

Roots: Did you know that radishes can be cooked, and that the sharp hotness mellows with cooking? Roasted radishes, along with roasted beets and turnips, are a delicious savory treat that make a wonderful salad topping. The contrast of hot and cold is very appealing, and the addition of a sprinkle of shredded or crumbled cheese and some toasted pecans makes a satisfying meal. The white Harukei turnips are delicious raw, and if you find the sharp flavor a bit much, you can peel them to reduce that. Roast your beets whole and the peels will rub right off (okay, you might want to wear gloves to avoid bright red hands, but it sure is easy).
3 Qi Salad
Doesn't that look delish? In order to pursuade FSC member Kathy Kuper to post the recipe in the forum so we can include it in our recipe database, we are threatening to post her email address here on the site so all the members can harass her relentlessly until she gives it up! Just kidding. But we sure would like that recipe...
sweet!
Top: Peach blueberry cobbler. Bottom: Pecan Pie

Winning Desserts

Money Shot: Little did I know when this shot was taken that these two lovely desserts would tie for first place. Okay bakers, cough up those recipes!
