Welcome to Week 5!
In typical St. Louis fashion, we seem to have bypassed the lovely spring weather with warm days and chilly nights this week, and have leapt full force into hot and sticky summer. We're still hopeful for some pleasant temperatures.
The happy thing about the heat and sunshine is that the produce is finally starting to come in nicely. We are super excited to see some asparagus and strawberries this week! We hope this is just the beginning of a long and prosperous season for these spring favorites!
NO plain peanut butter (honey roasted only). NO TORTILLAS OR TORTILLA CHIPS (we have a few frozen large, but we're waiting for them to get back to it. We'll let you know when they let us order!
Extras Available
Email your oders by noon to orders@fairshares.org, and don't forget to include your pickup group in all correspondence. Some items are in limited supply, so please leave a second choice if you are attempting an even trade.
- Sunshine Farms Strawberries: $6.50/qt.
- Yellow Dog or Lehr Farms Asparagus: $3.25/.75 lb. bunch
- Mint: Nothing says refreshing like mint! Add to salads, cocktails, or just plain water to refresh your body and your palate: $1.50
Thyme: Add to dips or salad dressings, or your home-made chicken broth, eggs, etc. $1.00
Collards: Sooo good sauteed with garlic in olive oil and added to pasta, or served as a side. $2.00/bunch. Also makes a great pesto.
Bamboo Shoots: Peel off the sheath leaves, boil in an uncovered pot of water for 20 minutes, sprinkle with sea salt and eat as an almost calorie-free snack, or slice thin and add to salads or stir-fries. So much better than the canned version, these taste like a cross between hearts of palm and artichoke hearts. $7.00
Marcoot Quark Cheese: plain, strawberry or garlic herb: $5.00
Salume Beddu Mostarda: Serve with chevre or quark cheese as a cracker spread or over any cheese or cured meat, delish! $7.50
It's grilling season, wahoo! Grab a beer and throw some meat on the grill. We have Match for you vegetarians who would like to partake! Check the swap list and place your orders!

Totally Rad!
Dude, when's the last time you heard that word?
How about some radishes dipped in sea salt? Or perhaps in that delicious arugula pesto you are going to make this week? Or maybe slice them thin and make a nice butter and radish sandwich? How sophisticated of you, dahling.
We don't have extra radishes to sell just yet, but the photo was too pretty not to share.

At Last!
Strawberry love: If you can bring yourself to do anything but just gobble them up, how will you prepare your berries? I like them sliced in a salad with a little goat cheese and tossed with a black pepper and balsamic vinaigrette. I like them sliced on my granola in the morning. I like them sliced over ice cream, or mashed and mixed with the Marcoot Quark cheese. I like them sliced and arranged beautifully on my open-faced peanut butter sandwich.
I also like them blended into a cocktail, but there will be time for that after the simple act of scarfing them plain has been exhausted. Happy strawberry season. Happy you. Happy me.

Ahhsparagus
The first asparagus of the season is always the most exciting, isn't it? Simply steamed, roasted in the oven, quickly sauteed, or added raw in a salad, you can't go wrong. Once you've had your fill of the simple preparations, consider a delicious Asparagus Pesto, like this one in a video by Mark Bitman.

Slow Food St. Louis
For those of you who are unaware of this awesome organization, we can attribute the start of Fair Shares to our participation in Slow Food and all that it stands for. Here's a bit of info about Slow Food, and the local chapter, Slow Food St. Louis.
Slow Food Mission: Slow Food is an international non-profit, member-supported organization that was founded in 1989 to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people's dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes, and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.
Slow Food St. Louis actively supports the Slow Food philosophy and mission in the St. Louis area and focuses on raising awareness about the food we eat. They've put together a fabulous guide to asking the right questions when you buy your food to make sure you are supporting good, clean and fair food. Read more here.
You can sign up for emails to learn about all the great opportunities Slow Food St. Louis offers, like meeting farmers and hearing their stories at SLOWednesdays at the Schlafly Bottleworks, seeing any of the free Food on Film series, joining the book club, and more!
