Welcome to Week 4!

Will April showers really bring May flowers?

With every report worse than the last, it's amazing that we have such a great variety of produce! How is it that so many producers have goodies for us? Last year, there were a number of government grants giving hoop houses, or high tunnels to farmers to help extend the growing season. These structures allowed us to give fresh produce much later into the fall and winter, and is now bringing us lots of wonderful early treats, like tomatoes and cucumbers!

NO TORTILLA CHIPS!

San Luis Tortilla Company is moving this week and will be unable to provide tortillas or chips until they are set up in their new digs. Kudos to the mastermind behind moving the only tortilla manufacturer in town on the week of Cinco de Mayo. Ole!

yw flood
Rebecca and Oliver make the most of the floods at Yellow Wood Farms.

How High's the Water, Mama?

The rain not only needs to stop, it needs to recede! Here's a note from Tricia Wagner at Yellow Wood Farms:
"We are in the middle of a serious flood. We lost all of our spring crops in the field and a good chunk of potatoes. All of the fingerlings. They were the last thing to go under and we hope it will recede today so maybe they will survive. We’ll see.

On a positive note, it makes for great floating/canoeing! I try to take pictures but they never catch the massiveness of the water filling hundreds of acres on our road overnight (And it always seems to come in overnight). All of the waterfowl and mice and fish moving into new areas. There are areas that are over 20 feet underwater. The fence posts disappear. We have a van that is submerged except for the very tip top of the roof.

In between the tears it is something to see."

Run for the Roses
vs.
Cinco De Mayo

Whether you are celebrating Derby Day or Mexican Independence Day (or both), these are two very good reasons to include fresh mint in your cocktails! The quintessential cocktail for the Run for the Roses is the Mint Julep. There are innumerable recipes available online; find your favorite, or try this one: http://localfoods.about.com/od/drinks/r/mintjulep.htm

As Deborah Schneider says on the website Leite's Culinaria: "The mojito is so sexy and light that it would be a shame not to adapt the Cuban original to the Mexican model." Okay, that sounds like a good idea! Here's the recipe: http://leitesculinaria.com/40521/recipes-mexican-mojito.html

NOTE: Food items are listed with producer followed by the item in bold. Some items are too long for one line, so pay attention when swapping!
harukei turnips
Hakurei Turnips
These sweet and delicate baby turnips have succulent greens that make a perfect dish when roasted whole with with greens and bulbs attached. A drizzle of olive oil and sea salt is all that's needed. Roast in a hot oven for about 25 minutes. The greens get a bit crunchy and the turnips get a bit soft. If you're garlic crazy like me, throw in a few whole cloves to flavor them and give yourself a treat. These turnips are mild enough to eat raw--slice them up to add to salads or crunch as a snack.
heirloom tomatoes on the vine
Family Heirlooms

They may be "hot house" tomatoes that don't compare to the delicious field tomatoes that will come later in the season, but the imported, hard, plastic variety you'll find in the grocery stores have nothing on these ripe, juicy early treats!

Eat Your Greens!

Spring greens are the perfect filler. You can add them into pasta or rice dishes, or cook them by themselves as a side dish. They cook down to nothing, so if you're feeling overwhelmed by greens, just wash them and throw them in a pan. Voilá! You now have only a quarter of what yoy had before. Oh, and they're good for you! Add a bit of vinegar, or better yet, sauté them in the delicious Our Garden butter and sprinkle with sea salt. Now there's something you can fill up on guilt free!
