Welcome to Season 4, Week 1

We look forward to seeing Odd Week and Full Share members this week!

These first few weeks of newsletters will include bits of information on making trades, what we re-use and recycle, tips on storing and using your Fair Shares food, and other useful information we would like all members to know, so please do read them even if it isn't your pick up week.

Returning Members: If you have an unpaid balance from last season, you will not be allowed to pick up your food without paying that off! If you are unable to find the balance on the invoice we mailed you twice, please just bring a blank check. We'll note the amount on your check-in list so please don't email us to ask.

Your Fair Share

Due to the complexity of putting together $50 worth of food each week for seven different groups over two days of pickups, especially with the inconsistencies of produce yield, we keep a running tally of both odd and even weeks, and average to insure each share gets the full value of the subscription over the course of the season. During the summer months, we’ll run a bit over the $50 mark when the wonderful fresh fruits and veggies abound. During the winter, we’ll run a bit shy to bring the average back down and even it out.

Try Everything!

For sharing members who alternate weeks and who might not get the opportunity to try a particular food, you may purchase it additionally at your pickup site, or trade something in your food list for it if we have extra available. Unfortunately some items just aren’t available in large enough quantities for our 315 members (plus sharing members). In this case we may offer it to a few groups, or announce it to all on a first come, first served basis. (Remember, volunteers get special perks!)

Trades and Additional Purchases

We encourage and ask everyone to give all the foods we include a chance, even if you think you won’t like them. Many members have admitted that they liked the local, sustainably-produced versions of even their least favorite foods!

For those of you with dietary restrictions, you are certainly welcome to swap in your non-perishable items for something else we have available at our pickup sites, but we would like to discourage new members from making pre-requested trades until you understand the routine a bit better. We won’t have much time for answering email questions for the first few weeks while we’re getting new members settled, and it will be much easier to explain the system in person at your pickup site.

You can read more about the rules on the Trades page of our website.

Coming Soon!

Hopefully next week, if the weather cooperates... We think having something to look forward to is important!

Spinach, Arugula and Mizuna, Oh My

Happy Spring Greens everyone!
We were able to get enough delicious green stuff to start the season off with a bang.
So what's mizuna? It's a delicious Japanese mustard that is picked young and is milder than American mature mustard greens. It makes a delicious salad in itself, or added to other salad greens, and is wonderful as a basil substitute in pesto. It can also be thrown in with pasta or rice dishes to add a nutritious and delicious twist. Try arugula or spinach as a pesto as well.

Check out our recipe database on the website for ideas on what to do with all the goodies in your share this week. Or if you would like to share your favorite recipes or food tips, log in on
and post them to the Fair Shares forum. We'll be working on making it more user-friendly and active, and you can help by contributing regularly! We'll select a member tip or recipe to include in the newsletter each week if we get some good contributions!

This week, we'd like to thank returning FSC member Melissa Pillot for her great suggestion on washing your greens:

Getting Ready for Greens

Stop washing all your rinse water down the drain.  This is greens season and depending on the farm and when the food was picked (ie during a rainstorm) that probably means lots and lots of rinsing*.  Get a small wash tub just big enough to fit in your kitchen sink and a 5 gallon bucket. As you rinse your greens loosely in the wash tub, you'll get more grit off than you would trying to pack it all into a salad spinner. Dump the excess water into the bucket, rinse again, dump again, and then go the salad spinner route to get off excess water.
